NetOne, ZTA team up to digitise Zimbabwe’s tourism sector

Mobile network operator NetOne and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) have entered into a long-term partnership to strengthen the tourism sector by improving efficiency and expanding its reach through the strategic use of digital technologies.

As part of the deal, NetOne donated 50 laptops and 35 printers to ZTA to support the partnership’s operational rollout, an intervention anticipated to fast-track digitisation across the tourism value chain.

Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe added another 20 laptops to the donation.

The signing ceremony was officiated by ZTA chief executive Dr George Manyaya and NetOne Mobile Financial Services general manager Joseph Machiva, representing NetOne chief executive officer, Raphael Mushanawani.

“What we are doing together is not to redefine tourism, but to strengthen it, to enhance its efficiency, expand its reach and deepen its impact through the strategic application of digital technologies.

“As NetOne, we see ourselves not merely as a telecommunications provider, but as a national enabler, a digital partner and a key pillar in Zimbabwe\'s transformation journey,” Mushanawani said.

“Our role is to ensure that connectivity becomes the backbone upon which sectors such as tourism continue to thrive and evolve.  Through this partnership, we are supporting the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority in modernising its inspectorate function by enabling the transition from manual processes to fully digitised operations.

“The provision of ICT tools, secure connectivity and integrated digital platforms will allow for real-time data collection, improved regulatory efficiency and enhanced service delivery across the country,” he added.

Beyond this initiative, NetOne said it continues to invest in the broader digital ecosystem that supports tourism.

“We\'re expanding network coverage in key tourism corridors and destinations, ensuring that visitors and local communities alike have access to reliable connectivity. We\'re rolling out Wi-Fi services in strategic tourism locations to enhance the visitor experience and support local enterprise,” Mushanawani said.

ZTA board chairman Farai Chimba said the impact of the collaboration between the two entities would be felt in the wider economy.

“This collaboration will translate into real economic growth and impact through digitalisation… And the impact at the end of the day must be felt by our citizens and our tourists,” Chimba said.

“(NetOne)’s commitment to strengthening digital infrastructure and connectivity is not only timely, but essential in positioning Zimbabwe as a competitive destination. The digital transformation vision has only been made stronger today.

“And for Zimbabwe, this puts us at a very competitive advantage in the global tourism landscape.”
