Buffalo incursion sparks foot and mouth outbreak

A foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Mangwe District, Matabeleland South Province, Zimbabwe, has been attributed to buffaloes.

According to a note from the country’s Directorate of Veterinary Services, the outbreak was reported on January 5. 2026. at the Maholi and Hannavale dip tanks, located in Mangwe District, which borders Botswana.

“Investigations suggest that the source of the infection may have been buffaloes, which were sighted in the communal areas two months before the outbreak,” the note said.

Clinical signs consistent with FMD were observed in cattle of various age groups, with 54 cases reported out of a census of 2 403 cattle.

The authorities stated that further analysis is underway, with samples being sent to a reference laboratory in Botswana for typing and vaccine matching.

“Control measures being instituted include strict quarantine enforcement and movement control. vaccinations within a 20 km radius. surveillance in and around the affected areas, and awareness campaigns,” the note said.
